This 19 inch tall doll, circa the late 19th or early 20th century, was manufactured in Germany by Simon & Halbig. She has an olive tone bisque head with deeply modeled ethnic features, sleep eyes, and an open mouth with teeth. She has her old cardboard pate and a black human hair wig. The head is incised, “SH 1199//Germany//DEP//7 ½.” It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The original composition ball jointed body is also in good condition; however, unfortunately someone chose to repaint it. The body should have a yellow cast to it but this one is paler due to the repaint. I decided to leave the original body as it currently is rather than replace it. I will leave the future repair of replacement to the new owner. Personally, the repaint only shows on the hands and I can live with it since the head is so magnificent. The doll wears fascinating dress of the period with ornate embroidered trim and metallic thread. While not specifically an Asian costume, it complements this doll well. Miss Simon & Halbig also wears antique cotton underclothing and newer shoes and socks. This particular character mold is quite sought after by collectors and this doll has particularly “early out of the mold” modeling that makes her an exceptional example of 1199 Oriental model.
