This 29 inch tall doll, circa the 1890s, has a 7 ½ inch shoulder head. The head, with a black painted hairstyle of deeply modeled curls and exposed lower ears, is incised with the number 12 on the back of the shoulder plate. The china lady head is definitely German and was most likely manufactured by Hertwig. The cloth body has china lower arms and legs. The left leg has been broken at the ankle and glued. The head appears to be in good condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. There is some typical flaking and wear to some of the curls on the head. The body is heavy and relatively sturdy but does have numerous patches as can be seen in the photographs. With the proper Victorian clothing, this doll could be quite impressive and regal.
