These type dolls are what make collecting fun for me. They are so individual and original. I believe the handmade couple would have been created in the early 20th century to represent an early colonial couple—perhaps George and Martha Washington. The dolls have delicately drawn facial features with old cotton batting wigs. Each wears a period costume of voile, cotton, velveteen, satin, and brocade. The bodies appear to be created from heavy paper rolled into tubes. The clothing is sewn onto the dolls so I did not attempt to investigate further. In some way, they remind me of the glorious old paper dolls of the past. Both dolls are in good clean condition with some typical age discoloration.
