This 19 inch tall doll, circa the 1890s, has a china shoulder head made in Germany by Alt, Beck & Gottschalck. The 4 ½ inch tall head has molded and painted facial features with a black hairstyle often called Highland Mary. This particular doll has lovely deep modeled comb lines on the hair and painted brushstrokes around the forehead. The doll has an old cloth body with some patching and repairs; however, it does appear to be quite sturdy with no leakage of the stuffing material. Mary has more contemporary, but appropriate, lower china arms. The antique lower legs, with molded and painted heeled boots, do have some breakage and repair. The china head is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The hair does have a few typical flakes to the curls on the back of the head. There is an incised number, “1000#8” on the lower back of the shoulder plate. The doll comes dressed only in sewn on antique underclothing and is ready for a beautiful dress to be added by her new owner.
