This 20 inch tall doll, circa the 1880s, was manufactured by the German firm of J.D. Kestner. The doll has a bisque socket head and a ball jointed composition body. The head is in good condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. It has brown glass set eyes and a closed mouth. The doll has a human hair wig and a cardboard pate. The pate is old but is a replacement. The back of the head is incised, “F made in 10//Germany//169.” The body retains the original finish. Miss Kestner wears white cotton underclothing and an antique cotton lace trimmed dress. She also wears newer, but appropriate, black socks and shoes. The bisque is particularly lovely on this doll and typical of the quality of the early Kestner dolls.
