This 11 ½ inch tall doll, circa 1880, was manufactured by the German firm of Simon & Halbig. She has a bisque socket head with a bisque shoulder plate and a leather gusseted body and beautifully sculpted bisque lower arms. The arms are jointed at the elbow. According to Jan Foulke, in her book, "Simon & Halbig: The Artful Aspect," this type body with the bisque jointed lower arms was considerably more expensive than other body types. This doll has blue glass set eyes and an open mouth with the early square upper teeth. She has a brunette human hair wig. The head is incised, "SH3//949." The bisque shoulder plate and socket head are both in good condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The bisque lower arms are also in good condition. The gusseted kid leather body is sturdy with a few small leather repairs. Miss SH wears white cotton underclothing and a blue print antique cotton dress. Her shoes and socks are later replacements. This is a lovely early bisque head Simon & Halbig doll in a great petite size.
