This 28 inch tall doll, circa the 1870s, has a 7 ½ inch tall china shoulder head. The head has the distinctive Dolly Madison hairstyle with molded ribbon around the head and a bow in the front. The doll retains her original cloth body with leather hands. The somewhat worn red wool dress, with hand embroidery decoration, is also original. I purchased the doll from the original family and will provide the name of the original owner to the purchaser if desired. The doll head was manufactured by the German firm of Alt, Beck & Gottschalck. She has a 14 incised on the back of her shoulder plate. The head is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. There are a couple of the typical firing spots in the china. The body is sturdy and clean but shows wire and old patching. It is so rare to find a doll that you know is original with some provenance.
