This 14 inch tall pair, circa the late 19th century, is created from hand carved wood. I believe the wood is probably walnut. I love the character faces on these two people. They definitely appealed to me as a doll collector and believe the pair could fit right in with any doll display. The two are quite artfully carved with ethnic costumes and wooden shoes. The pair appears to be from Germany but could also be from The Netherlands. The woman holds a sheaf of wheat and the man carries a sickle. Both are in excellent condition except for a break and repair on the brim of the man's hat. This is not really obvious unless under close inspection. There are some hand written markings on the bottoms of the bases but I cannot decipher the information. It is amazing to me that someone could bring such vitality to a block of wood. The faces are so full of life! I know that another doll addict will agree.
