This large Wellings gaucho doll was modeled by the English dollmaker after the South American cowboy-gaucho. In profile as the picture shows, he looks ready for "High Noon" in the Old West. He is 23" tall and his hat takes him to 26.5", His costume is of bright orange and yellow shades with silk ribbon as ties at his throat and waist. He wears brown felt shoes. His elegantly tailored costume is adorned with silver buttons. His Wellings tag is on the bottom of his left foot. He has a black mohair wig. His facial paint is well drawn and perfect other than a bit of a rub to the white accent on his lower lip. No repaint on him.
This is a rare size and an excellent example of the artistry of Norah Wellings. Circa 1938. His costume is in bright and very good to excellent condition with the exception of some moth holes and dirt on his hat. The moth holes could be corrected with some tiny fill ins of felt if they bother you. Small imperfections are more the rule than exception with these cloth dolls that moths are so fond of. He will make a striking addition to a cloth doll collection.
