This is the real deal! I've seen copies of this dress, and patterns to make this dress. However, this is the original and often copied antique outfit in the popular-style two piece doll dress! It is a deep ruby red color cashmere. (Don't be deceived by the color shown in the photos--there is NO hint of orange in the fabric.) It is a true blue-red. There is lavish lace trim on the jacket inside the neckline, on the collar, down the center front along either side of the silk covered buttons and buttonholes, on the faux pockets, and along the hemline of the jacket. There are burgundy silk satin bows and ribbon on the sleeves, neckline, trimming the faux pockets. The jacket closes in front with 8, burgundy silk covered buttons and handsewn buttonholes. The Jacket is lined with white polished cotton. The wonderful skirt has elaborate pleating, and the skirt closes on the left side with a hook and threadloop closure. When I took the photos, I had the fastener situated in the back, therefore the pleats look akilter. The front of the skirt has 3 sets of triple box pleats, the back of the skirt has knife pleats. I've taken photos of the skirt with the front and back properly shown. The skirt is lined with gauze.
This outfit is an obvious couture dress for an exquisite French bebe. It is made with mostly hand stitches, but some machine stitches as is typical of the late 1870s to early1880s period of doll clothing. This outfit was worn by a precious EJ, and with her blonde hair, pale bisque and blue PW eyes, this outfit enhanced the doll's beauty.
Since the fabric is cashmere, there are some tiny to small moth holes. The outfit was packed in a cedar chest until removed for these photos, so I will enumerate the moth holes. There is one pinhead size hole on the left collar corner at the neckline, and 4 holes on the back of the stand-up collar: 2 are pinhead size, and 2 are pinprick size. There is a pinhead size hole on the left front of the jacket, and one of the same size on the left back above the lace. There is a pinhead size hole 1/4 of the way up the center front on the pleat, and two pin prick holes on to the left of the pleat. On the back of the skirt near the right hem, are two pin head size holes. I've tried to be as accurate as possible, but will be happy to send detailed photos of these areas to potential clients.
The measurements: 5-1/8" across the shoulders, 13" around the chest, 14" around the waist, and 20" around the hips. The arm hole openings are 5-7/8", the sleeve openings are 4". The jacket length is 10" from the shoulder to the end of lace. The skirt has an 11" waist, but the hook and threadloop can be resewn to allow for a 12" waist. The skirt measures 9" in length. The total length of jacket and skirt as worn on a doll is about 13-14", measured from the shoulder to edge of lace, depending upon how long the buyer prefers to have the outfit's length.
If you know me, you are aware of my love for the Chevrot body Bru Jne. Unfortunately, this outfit is more appropriate for a chunky body bebe, either a kid body Bru Jne, Jumeau, or other French bebe. This is the only reason I would consider parting with such an exquisite outfit.......my Chevrot "girls" can't wear this.
