The bird of paradise is the closest I could find to the features of this bird depicted so elegantly for this pin. The tail feathers and beak resemble a bird of paradise, but the head feathers do not. What I especially like are the bright reflection of the rhinestones - red for the eye, bluish Aurora Borealis "feathers" and the streak of clear rhinestones down the right side edge. This is a great depiction of a very majestic looking bird.
I've always thought the metal used to make this brooch was sterling vermeil, but no, it did not test positive for sterling and is made of a good quality white metal with, at one time anyway, a gold wash. The gold wash is mostly gone, the chest is a silver tone color, but can still be seen on the inside of the feathers and feet. It looks like it was made this way as it is still a very attractive piece.
it stands 2 7/8" high and 1" wide. It is unsigned and in very good condition with a safety clasp on the back. The rhinestones are very sparkly and the finish is nice unlike the blown up photos here.
