With diamond shapes inside graceful swirls, these posies with their bright little faces alternate with stylized double flowers that have distinctive Art Deco shaped fans on either side. I just love this very creative design. This was more of an engineering effort along with a designer to get the design to fit inside the circle perfectly.
The circle pin measures 1 7/8" in diameter so it's not small. It is clearly signed SYMMETALIC STERLING +14K. The base metal is sterling with a nice layering of 14K gold over the top. The company also produced jewelry marked 14K Gold Filled, and 14K, which means to me that those marked just 14K, and not gold filled, had a thicker layering of gold over sterling. The brooch has a nice warm. almost rosy golden glow to it. It is in excellent condition with the gold in tact and is definitely in the heirloom category. Nice piece - great gift too!
I uploaded large photos so that you can click on a photo and see a blown up version. Just remember that you may see minor blemishes that are not actually visible at normal size.
The W. E. Richards Company, founded around 1900 in Attleboro, MA first signed their jewelry Symmetalic, a trademark, in 1936. It appears that they stopped using that mark in the mid forties and began using the trademark, WRE from then on. They are known for top quality materials and were influenced by Art Deco and Edwardian styles. They are still in business although not making jewelry.
Please refer to Fred Rezazadeh's book, Collectible Silver Jewelry, page 58, for some more examples of Symmetalic pieces.
