This very sweet old brooch has a trio of blossoms engraved in low relief on brass and encased with a heavy layer of yellow, blue, lavender and green colored translucent enamel. The technique is called basse-taille, French for low-cut, and was developed in Italy in the 13th century. The effect is wonderful as the detailed engraved flowers can be seen through the colored enamel giving life to the flowers beneath.
The brooch has an open tube clasp which works well. It was once lightly silver plated, but the plating on the front is now gone and the brass shows through which is very nice. There is some patina on the brass which adds a definite and lovely vintage look to it too. There is still some residue of the original silver plating on the back. It measures a bit under 1 1/2" long and 1" high.
