With the profile of the famous Queen of Egypt, this brooch displays some of the beauty for which Queen Nefertiti was known. She was one of the most controversial monarchs of Egypt and considered the most beautiful. She lived as Queen during the mid 1300s. Not much was known about Nefertiti until the discovery of a limestone bust of her found at the royal retreat in Amarna in 1912. The bust went on display in 1924 in Berlin when she became a fascinating figure of ancient Egypt. The name Nefertiti means the beautiful, or perfect, woman has come.
Due to the interest created by the opening of the tombs by noted archaeologists in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries many souvenir items were created and sold to tourists who flocked to Egypt. This brooch dates back to those by-gone days and was very likely carried here from Egypt by a fairly well-to-do tourist of that time. Fascinating history in such a small piece of silver.
The metal test positive for silver between 800 and 900 parts of silver. Sterling is 925/1000 parts, so it is a little less than sterling. It measures a bit over 1 1/2" in diameter. It seems th have an illegible mark on the back. It has a pin back that slips into an open C wire. There is a kink in the pin which does not deter its use. Other than that, it is in fine condition.
