This fun fish brooch by Hattie Carnegie has an enameled head and mid-body and a tail section of Dynel fiber filaments.
The gold-plated cutie is 2 5/8” long, 2” high and ½” thick. The back end of Ms. Fishy is made of vivid turquoise Dynel modacrylic fiber.
This silky, lustrous material was developed by Union Carbide in 1951 and was popularly used in wigs. In short tufts, the fanned fins and tail are very soft and yet hold their shape.
Hattie Carnegie also used Dynel in a series of large flower brooches which have gotten their share of publicity in the last few years as they are a favorite of Michelle Obama.
The enameled scales are shades of lime green-yellow and bright green. The glass eye is emerald green and the mouth is hot pink.
On the back of the brooch is the “Hattie Carnegie” cartouche. The pin secures with a safety clasp. Condition is very fine.
