Description: A wonderful antique Petra Dura brooch, which is an Italian art form of inlaid gemstones and marble, circa 1890. The various colors of the marble and gemstones are inlaid into an Italian black marble background and framed in a 14K gold setting. The undersides of the stones are grooved so that they interlocked, like a jigsaw puzzle. Everything is held tautly in place by the frame or mounting. In this particular piece, there are three different flowers and green leaves. The gold frame has a twisted rope border. Pietra Dura appeared in Rome in the 16th century and is a highly collectible antique treasure today.
