Theodore Haviland "Daughters of the Revolution" American Flag Commemorative Plate - Americana
A beautiful Theo. Haviland plate made for the Daughters of the Revolution. It displays a 13 star American flag in the center, surrounded by other symbols, a bell, spinning wheel, the initials "DR," and a cobalt and gold shield with ribbons surmounted by an eagle, the ribbons read "Daughters of the Rovolution - Liberty Home and Country - 1776 - 1891."
The "Daughters of the Revolution" is a national society founded in 1890 in New York whose membership consists of those who can trace direct descent from Revolutionary War soldiers and statesmen, "or a recognized patriot who rendered material service in the cause of American Independence." At the time, these were more stringent requirements than the Daughters of the American Revolution. The society still exists, and the objectives are to perpetuate a patriotic spirit, to commemorate events of the War of Revolution, to preserve existing direct documents relating to the period, and to promote friendship among members with common interests.
CONDITION is grand with no problems to report. The Theodore Haviland mark dates this piece to 1893, and it also displays the retailers name, L. Straus & Sons. - New York., and the legend "patent applied for." Measures 9 1/4" in diameter.
A fine piece for patriotic display. Enjoy!
