This wonderful antique children's plate displays a variation of the familiar "Now I lay me down to sleep" prayer we all know today:
I lay my body down to sleep:
Let angels guard my head.
And through the hours of darkness keep.
Their watch around my bed.
Isn't this old version charming? Not to mention the sleepy child and angels looking through a window at the new crescent moon.
Plates and cups with transfer decoration like this were often given to children for good behavior and moral instruction. I wonder how many little hands this sweet piece has passed through.
CONDITION is excellent with no chips, cracks, or repairs. There are a few stray spots of orange paint, one on the edge, another on the windowsill, that are original to the manufacture… this piece never had any clobbered color applied to it, but obviously was in that vicinity of the workshop. There is also a smudge of something on the back that does not wash off, no color, but you can see it in the photo with raking light across the back. Unsigned, but from one of the many early to mid 19th C Staffordshire potteries. Circa 1820 - 1840. Measures 6 1/2" in diameter.
A lovely piece if you collect children's china, angels, or early Staffordshire. This would be a very sweet choice to hang in a child's room. Enjoy!
