Antique Staffordshire Temperance Figurine - Double Sided Water and Gin
An interesting Staffordshire temperance figurine showing a smiling well dressed, sober gentleman on one side with the legend "WATER" underneath, and a worried looking, rumpled man with holes in his clothing on the opposite side with the legend "GIN" underneath. Hardly a subtle message.
The temperance movement was extant in England throughout the 19th C, but pressure for prohibition increased in 1876 when the British Women's Temperance Association was formed, and again in 1884 with the formation of the National Temperance Federation. However, the movement lost it's wind after the failure of the 18th Amendment in the US.
CONDITION is great with no problems to report. Marked on the bottom "Old Staffordshire England" as shown. Measures approximately 8 3/8" tall.
A fine historical piece of interest to both collectors of Staffordshire and Temperance items. Enjoy!
