Antique David Andersen Spoon w/ Hand Engraved Christian Iconography - Madonna & Child, Father, Son & Holy Spirit - Religious
A wonderful spoon by one of Norway's most esteemed silversmiths. This piece is covered with hand engraved Christian iconography and also has an inscription. The original significance and meaning of the symbols and inscription as they relate to the piece remain a bit of a mystery, although it is clear enough that the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child appear inside the bowl of the spoon, with the Holy Trinity... Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (represented by an owl), beautifully engraved on the back with the surrounding inscription reading (I think), "HIELP * O(?)S * DI * H(?)ELIGE * TREI * FO(?)LDIG * M(?)ID * M * M * D * 1511" I am told that a rough translation would be "Help us the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit)," with "M * M * D" likely signifying a name, probably a girls name with the first "M" being the girls first name initial, the second "M" being her father's name initial, and the final "D" meaning 'Datter' and signifying 'daughter of'. I'm totally at a loss as to what the significance of the date "1511" might be. If anybody can help with an interpretation or has any information, please drop me a line, my e-mail is on the left hand navigation bar.
Condition is excellent., with the mark being a very early version of the David Andersen mark. Measures 6 1/4" long, the bowl is 2 3/16" wide, and it weighs 46 grams on my electronic postal scale.
An interesting piece, beautifully crafted and hand engraved, it's meaning shrouded in history.
