I could sure use a little summer right about now, and with a super duper Ice Cream Set as cheery as this, summer certainly can't be far behind, can it? Happy, happy, from the charming transfers of sliced Neapolitan ice cream... chocolate, strawberry, and a curious polka dotted green center flavor (could it be pistachio?), to the impressed scalloped border accented with a wavy black line and pale blue (slightly iridized in raking light) and orange. This is just one nifty looking way to enjoy America's favorite summer treat.
If you've ever made ice cream in an old fashioned hand crank ice cream maker (you can still get them!), you know why home made ice cream always was, and still is, considered to be the ultimate treat. I've seen some tiny old take-home cardboard cartons from ice cream shops that must have held only four ounces... compare that to the half gallons folks haul home from the supermarket today!
Condition is good with overall crazing as shown. There are some assorted manufacturing irregularities in the application of the transfers, along with some glaze pops, and a small glazed over nick that is original to the piece. After market issues include a few scratches. I also found three chips as shown in a close up photo; the largest (1/4" x 3/16") is on the back of one plate and cannot be seen from the front, the smallest measures approximately 1/32". However, these problems are minor when measured against the immense charm and overwhelming appeal of this set. Platters measure 9 1/16" x 12 11/16" & 9" x 12 1/2" or approximately 9" x 12 1/2" each, plates measure between 6 1/4" & 6 3/8" each. No marks at all, but there's a distinctly American vibe to this fabu set.
Consider the decorating possibilities. These plates are really stunners, and would look fantastic hanging in a kitchen, breakfast room, dining room, or even on a summer porch, and can certainly be pressed into service for your very own 'Summer Ice Cream Bash'.
This set is PERFECT for a summer ice cream bash on the lawn. Here's a plan... first invite some friends over... I'll explain why in a minute. Next, unveil your old fashioned ice cream maker, ice, rock salt, and of course heavy cream, sugar and favorite fruit or flavoring. Then channel Tom Sawyer, convincing your friends that it will be SO MUCH FUN to make home made ice cream, all the while madly mixing up your ingredients... you do remember that fence Tom had to whitewash, don't you? Of course when it's done, serve it up on these wonderful plates, and by the time you've all licked up the last drips, everybody will be exhausted, sticky, laughing, and full of home made deliciousness. But of course this set will work just as well if you only invite your friends Ben & Jerry.
