Staffordshire Whippet Inkwell - Pen Holder - 19th C - Whippet or Greyhound - Dog Ink Well - image 1 of 9

Who’s a g’boy… this charming, whimsical Whippet or Greyhound fashioned as an Inkwell once sat on a Victorian desk awaiting m’lady’s muse. This particular example displays a glint in his eye, whiskers (!), and the cutest toes this side of the pond (if you think I’m kidding, check out the photographs). Another nice touch is the subtle modeling of the dog’s ribs and the mole on his cheek, both of which can be seen on the rear side.

CONDITION is excellent antique. The blue is glazed while the orange and black details are cold painted, as is the gold. There is a small scratch in the orange paint at the dogs rear flank on the back side of the piece. There is also a tiny ‘something’ rattling around inside, probably a stray bit of clay from the manufacture - or possibly the errant diamond from m’ladys brooch that mysteriously went missing on Boxing Day 1870… of course I can’t guarantee this… lol. Measures 7 ½” x 2 ⅝” x 5 ¾” (H). Weighs 14.9 oz.

This little fella will sit on your desk and remind you of a time when writing was a more leisurely enterprise involving pens and ink and lovely papers - when the art of writing was more artful. Enjoy!
