Folk Art Masonic Desk Set - Carved and Inlaid Wood - image 1 of 8

An interesting one of a kind Masonic Folk Art Desk Set made of a variety of hardwoods and bone. It includes much of the iconography of Free Masonry, specifically the Mystic Shrine, including the Crescent (standing vertically above), two Royal Bengal Tiger Claws joined by a Keystone and Sphinx' head, Scimitar, and Star. A curious piece indeed.

The Crescent is fitted with two pieces of wood that act as a pen or pencil rest, while the Scimitar tucks under one of the Tiger Claws and lifts out of its fitted cradle to double as a letter opener. There are other carved parts some of which look to have been meant for specific items, two round smallish holes that may have held ink bottles or seals, and what looks to be a flat ramp… perhaps for stamps.

CONDITION is very good as shown. The set is possibly lacking some pieces, but I'm not sure what they may have been. I would guesstimate an early to mid 20th C date. Measures 11 3/4" x 6 1/16" not including the Crescent handle which is attached to the back and would add an additional 5/8". The wood and bone scimitar letter opener measures 5 5/16" long. The pencil was handy to show off the pen/pencil rests, I'm sure you've got something nicer.

Altogether an intriguing one-of-a-kind piece that would be a fine addition to any collection of Masonic items. The little carved depressions would ably hold clips, nibs, lead, stamps, zip drives, and all manner of small things that tend to accumulate on a desk. Enjoy!
