An engaging painting that creates a receding landscape of bright color-blocks and floating spheres grounded by two literal stick-figures placed front and center. The contemporary composition is offset in a Post Modern turn by techniques which harken back to ancient times. First, the entire composition is painted on a surface that appears to have been slashed and worn away which creates a second, older composition in relief under the first, the interplay creating a narrative of new building upon old. And second, the two black figures are covered with sgraffito, reminiscent of ancient hieroglyphs, which complements the monumental presence of the receding blocks of color in the landscape, and reinforces the duality of new and old.
CONDITION is excellent. The piece is framed under glass with a vertically corrugated mat which has a subtle horizontal line at regular intervals, giving an impression similar to the texture of old-fashioned laid paper - yet another layer of new upon old. The wooden frame is quite deep and heavy with a black front and natural wood sides - this is a luxe presentation. Unsigned, but not unimportant. Measures 25" x 25" overall, with a sight size if 13 ¼” x 13 ¼”. Weighs almost 8 lbs.
A fine piece of Contemporary Art. Treat yourself. Enjoy!
