The painting as a whole is charming because of its unsophisticated naivety. I've always been drawn to the innocence of naive paintings, and here, the subject and style are in splendid harmony.
CONDITION is excellent antique. The canvas is on its original 19th C stretchers with a label from Charles G Calder, Providence, Rhode Island affixed to the back. I believe the frame is the original deep lemon gold molding which was painted somewhere along the way and then sanded down leaving an attractively distressed surface, the old lemon gold showing through. Unsigned. Measures 20 ¾” x 17" overall, with a sight size of 15 ½” x 11 ⅝”. The canvas on its stretchers measures 16" x 12" - Weighs 3 lbs. 10 oz.
This painting has a great deal of charm. The classic romantic image rendered in primitive style has a particularly engaging appeal, its sweetness will touch even the hardest heart. Enjoy!
