A beautiful antique hand colored steel engraving entitled 'Mirabilis', not a reproduction, from the original English translation of Grandville's 'Les Fleurs Animees' published by R Martin in New York in 1847. Les Fleurs Animees is a fanciful, anthropomorphic look at plants and flowers with a strange, surreal edge which in this case reveals itself as a large moth or beetle advancing on the featured young woman-flower. Mirabilis is dressed in a short skirted gown with a peplum of leaves and flowing white trumpet sleeves. The wild tendrils of her hair are topped with a bell shaped blossom.

The information underneath says 'Marvel of Peru - Belle de Nuit - Mirabilis - Published by R Martin New York' Mirabilis is the botanical name for the flower we call a 'four o'clock.'

This charming print is ready to hang, beautifully framed in a gilt wood frame with an elaborate French triple mat - a luxe presentation that would cost many hundreds in any frame shop.

CONDITION is excellent antique. As expected, these nearly 170 year old steel engravings show some minor toning and and a few pinpoints of foxing. The original steel plates for this edition of 'Les Fleurs Animees' were re-cut in New York with no differences to the image save for the signature which on this plate is 'H. E. Tripler.' Measures 19 7/8 in. x 16 7/8 in. overall, with a sight size inside the elaborate French mat of 9 in. x 6 1/8 in. Weighs 4 lbs. 8 oz.

These fantastic antique Grandville engravings are very popular and originals like these are becoming more difficult to find. Treat yourself or someone special. Enjoy!
