A beautiful antique hand colored steel engraving entitled 'Tulip', not a reproduction, from the original English translation of Grandville's 'Les Fleurs Animees,’ published by R Martin in New York in 1847. Les Fleurs Animees is a whimsical, anthropomorphic view of flowers and plants with a strange, surreal edge, evidenced in this print by the exotic bud-headed men with bodies made of of leaves who stand behind the featured lovely lady 'Tulip.' Tulip's gown is composed of tulip petals with flowing leaf sleeves, the waist bound with a belt ending in a tulip bulb which she holds in her hand and swings like a censer. Her turban sprouts pistils and stamens.
The Information beneath says 'Tulip - Tulipe - Tulipa - Published by R. Martin. New York.'
This appealing print is ready to hang, beautifully framed in a gilt wood frame with an elaborate French triple mat - a luxe presentation that would cost many hundreds in any frame shop.
CONDITION is excellent antique. As expected, these nearly 170 year old steel engravings show some minor toning and some extremely minor foxing. The original steel plates for this edition of Les Fleurs Animees were re-cut in New York with no differences to the engaging image save the signature. Measures 19 ⅞” x 16 ⅞” overall, with a sight size inside the elaborate French mat of 9 in. x 6 ⅛” Weighs 4 lbs. 8 oz.
These fantastic antique Grandville engravings are very popular and originals like these are becoming more difficult to find. Treat yourself or someone special. Enjoy!
