J J Grandville - Antique Steel Engraving 'Pome-Granate' from 'Les Fleurs Animees' - Hand Colored - Elaborate Frame and Triple French Mat - image 1 of 10

A beautiful antique hand colored steel engraving entitled 'Pome-granate,' not a reproduction, from the original 1847 English translation of Grandville's 'Les Fleurs Animees' published by R. Martin in New York. Les Fleurs Animees is a fanciful, anthropomorphic look at plants and flowers which sometimes has a surreal edge. In this print, the lovely lady Pome-granate is depicted as a Spanish dancer. Her gown has a full twirling skirt covered with pome-granate leaves and blossoms, her bodice and sleeves are flaring scarlet blooms as is her head-piece, even her stockings have delicate pink decoration up the front. She's quite an exotic flower with her castanets held high, but I don't see any of the pomegranate fruit that has become so popular in our own time, I suppose tastes have changed.

The information underneath the image says 'Pome-granate - Fleur de Grenadier - Punica - Published by R. Martin. New York.'

This charming print is ready to hang, beautifully framed in a gilt wood frame with an elaborate French mat - a luxe presentation that would cost many hundreds in any frame shop.

CONDITION is excellent antique. As expected these nearly 170 year old steel engravings show some minor toning and some extremely minor foxing. The original steel plates for this edition of Les Fleurs Animees were re-cut in New York with no differences to the image save for the signature. Measures 19 ⅞” x 16 ⅞” overall with a sight size inside the elaborate French Mat of 9 in. x 6 ⅛” Weighs 4 lbs. 5.5 oz.

These fantastic antique Grandville engravings are very popular and originals like these are becoming more difficult to find. Treat yourself or someone special. Enjoy!
