An atmospheric coastal scene by 20th C artist Eleanor Church capturing a quiet moment on a New England pier. Three fishermen work intently on their nets in the shady foreground silhouetted against the bright misty harbor beyond. Skillfully composed and rendered, you can almost hear the gulls and smell the sea.
Eleanor Church (Rye, NY) was active in the mid 20th C. She is perhaps best known for coastal scenes like this. She has shown at the Smithsonian Institute (1963) and The Lever House in NY (1964), and her work was featured in the American Artists Professional League Grand Championship show (1960)
Condition is excellent. Framed and ready to hang. Painted on canvas covered board and signed lower right. Framed in a distressed painted wooden period frame which shows normal wear. Measures 27 ½” x 21 ½” overall with a sight size of 23 ½” x 17 ½” and the painting itself measures 24” x 18” - Weighs 3 lbs. 8 oz.
This wonderfully evocative scene speaks of the mysteries of the sea and the men who live by her. Enjoy!
