This unusual surreal pen and ink wash drawing has a dreamlike, almost hallucinatory quality. I purchased it because I found it fascinating, and as I looked at it I began to see more and more. There is a large 'teddy bear' figure pinned to a stick and wearing striped pajamas - reminiscent of prison garb, a hospital gown, or pictures from concentration camps. Then there is the Ringmaster at the lower left with his shadowy ink wash audience at the lower right. The name "Peter" is written with the "P" forming an arrow that points to the Ringmaster with whom the artist identifies - I'm not sure if this is a signature or just a part of the drawing. The negative space around the 'audience' creates the shape of a body. Then there are dogs, and horses, and sheep, lightning, and what look like cosmic holes in reality. An intense and interesting piece.

CONDITION is very good vintage. The drawing is framed and ready to hang. Dated 9/3/96 at the lower right. Measures 17 1/4" x 21 1/4" overall, with an image size of 13 1/2" x 17".

If you are drawn to the strange and unusual you will love this hypnotic piece. There are layers within layers of images and interpretations waiting to be discovered. Fascinating. Enjoy!
