A diminutive folk art portrait with great naive charm. This woman looks back at us through the ages with a frank gaze, so very New England, where in fact, I found this piece. Her beautiful hair is precisely parted, curled, and carefully arranged around her face, the blue bow of her bonnet adds a shot of clear color, and she wears a lace collared dress with a fur wrap. She is dressed in her finery for this humbly presented portrait. Primitive perfection.
Rendered with remarkable precision and skill, every hair is a separate stroke. Quite lovely with an austere quality despite the fur and lace, no excess here, this lady has a very measured demeanor, but still, she looks as if she might have a secret with her Mona Lisa smile.
CONDITION is excellent antique and, I believe, completely original. As an object, the whole has a naive, primitive air. There is some foxing as shown. I believe the beaded barbola frame is original to the piece, and has long ago losses here and there, but it seems just right to me. Measures 6 5/8" in diameter overall without the bit of barbola at the top, sight size is 4 1/2" in diameter. Judging from the lady's clothing and hair style, I would guesstimate a third quarter 19th C date, sometime right around the Civil War.
