An outstanding pastel painting by the well listed American artist Thomas Raphael Congdon ( 1862 - 1917 ). Congdon was born in Addison NY, and studied both in NY and in Paris. He exhibited widely on both sides of the Atlantic; at the Society of American Artists, NY Academy of Design, Boston Art Club (permanent collection), Salon Champs Elysees, Salon d'Automne, American Art Association / Paris, as well as being chosen as one of the artists to exhibit at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. Congdon was a member of the Salamagundi Club / NY, and the American Art Association / Paris.

In this piece, Congdon shows a couple herding their flock of sheep into the barn. The painting appears to be a combination of watercolor, gouache, and pastel. The colors are warm and earthy with vivid pops of bright blue, red, and white. The man and woman are connected by the blue of their clothing, a common occurrence in life and a trick every costumer knows.

CONDITION is excellent antique, the painting is framed under antique glass in what is likely its original Victorian frame, a beauty which has some expected wear and dings, but no losses. Please look at the Photographs. Antique frames like this are of considerable value by themselves, so to find one still matched with its original art is a stroke of luck which enhances the value of both. Measures 23 5/8" x 17 3/4" overall, with a sight size of 16 1/2" x 10 5/8". Weighs 7 lbs. 5 oz.

This peaceful painting that captures a farm couple bringing their flock home at the end of the day suggests something noble about this simple act - all is well. Enjoy!
