This impressionistic still life painting of flowers, fruit, and linen is a stand out by Russian artist Maria Balakova. Rendered in gouache and watercolor, the piece is fairly large for a work like this on paper. The overall effect is quite realistic when viewed from a distance, but close observation reveals nearly discreet small organic areas of color - a dynamic effect, even the neutral wall undulates with color. The colors are vibrant and lively on the flowers and fruit while showing a marvelous sensitivity to the myriad subtle shades required to depict something as simple as the sheen of the linen tablecloth or the white ground of the traditional ethnic embroidery.
This lovely painting depicts objects the artist understands intimately - traditional Russian embroidery next to a hand woven basket of summer wildflowers, red tomatoes and peppers, a kitchen knife - they speak of the simple pleasures of hearth and home, of traditional women's arts and pursuits.
CONDITION is excellent. The painting is elaborately framed in a wooden frame under glass, ready to hang on your wall. If you've visited a frame shop lately, you know that framing a piece like this can easily cost you $600 or more. Signed and dated in Cyrillic at the lower right with a printed note taped to the back translating the artist's name. Measures 32" x 27" overall, with a sight size inside the mat of 21 1/2" x 16 1/2". Weighs 10 lbs. 5 oz.
The more I look at this painting the more I am impressed by it. A rare Russian beauty. Enjoy!
