This beautiful hand painted porcelain pitcher displays an abundance of luscious strawberries artfully arranged around the heavy belly of the piece. The composition complements both the subject and the shape of the porcelain. The painting is quite skillfully done, and signed... "-- Hertel" I think.Gorgeous.

China painting was most popular in the US during the 19th C through the beginning of the 20th C., and this lovely pitcher, with its romantic depiction of sweet strawberries perfectly expresses the Victorian love of nature. Its origin is a bit of a mystery though, I believe the porcelain is European, but I'm just not sure where... the romantically shaped and opulently gilded handle is saying French, Limoges to me, while the delicate floral relief border around the perimeter of the top is whispering Dresden. If anyone out there has definitive knowledge, I'd love to hear from you.

CONDITION is very nice with almost no wear to the heavy gilded handle or lip. There is one tiny nibble at the foot, you can see it at about 2 o'clock in the picture of the bottom... I didn't notice it until I photographed the piece. Measures 5 3/4" tall to the top of the handle and the spout, 7 3/4" from handle to spout, and approximately 7" in diameter across its belly... not a small piece.

Perfect for mulled cider in the autumn or lemonade in the spring and summer, this appealing pitcher is also a wonderful addition to a collection and would make a most romantic gift with its delicately rendered fruits if you can bear to part with it. Enjoy!
