This antique Billy Club or Night Stick could pass for a standard piece of police equipment until you see the tight seam where the tip of the business end unscrews to reveal a glass flask with a cork. Definitely not standard issue, but perhaps a welcome feature on a cold night patrolling the streets.
The piece is beautifully turned out of a fine grained hardwood and has a deep, warm patina from years of passing through many hands. The glass vial is hand blown as you can see in the detail photographs, and holds two fluid ounces (one shot glass full to the brim) when filled.
CONDITION is great. The hand turned threaded parts of the stick are in good working order, no small feat on a wood lathe. Please look at the photographs. Measures 21 ½” long. The shaft is 1 ½” in diameter with the handle turnings a bit larger. The hand blown ‘flask’ (glass tube) is 9” long and cannot be removed from the wood. Weighs 12.5 ounces.
I won’t speculate as to what sort of service this piece of equipment may have seen in the field, but as a novelty and a conversation piece it would be hard to beat (pun intended). Enjoy!
