Antique Baby Shoes circa 1840 - Silk Embroidered - 19th C
Gorgeous pair of Antique Silk Embroidered Baby Shoes circa 1840, adorned with a pleated silk satin ruffle at the instep and a tiny ribbon rose. The style is an ankle strap Mary Jane with a soft leather sole and a single tiny button on the strap. The entire shoe is constructed of pale pink silk and lined with a sturdy cotton or linen woven fabric. The forefoot is covered in silk floral embroidery rendered in satin stitch with a simple geometric design continuing around the sides and heel.
The stitching is all hand done - the teeny buttonhole on the strap, the stitching that attaches the upper to the sole, the stitches used to apply the edge casing, everything with the possible exception of the silk tape sewn around the edges of the leather sole which may have been done by one of the earliest sewing machines considering that these little slippers date to around 1840.
CONDITION is as you see it. There is some water staining and the silk is fraying in places, but for the most part is held structurally by its lining. Please look at the photographs. Each slipper measures 4 ½” long and 1 ⅞” across at the widest part of the sole.
A perfect addition to a treasured collection, or perhaps a special pair of shoes for dressing a favorite doll. Lots of love went in to the making of these little shoes for the lucky baby who wore them. Now it’s your turn. Enjoy!
