A wonderful, heavy sterling silver Shabbat or Sabbath set comprised of a pair of Shabbat candleholders and a Kiddush cup contained within a fitted case lined in deep blue velvet. This set was made for and sold by the New York retailer James Robinson, still one of the finest shops in the city for antique silver, jewelry, porcelain, and glass.
The set was crafted by Wakely & Wheeler, a London firm still producing fine silver today, even offering custom bespoke and restoration services. They produced this set specifically for James Robinson in 1961.
CONDITION is grand, the silver is in original condition and the case has done its job of protecting the sticks and cup well. The plush blue velvet of the box interior is in gently used condition, but the satin covered exterior shows wear and stains - please look at the photographs. The set is noticeably heavy in hand, the three silver pieces together weighing 368 grams or 13.1 ounces on my electronic postal scale. The Kiddush cup has been monogrammed with simple initials, but considering the weight of the silver, could certainly be buffed out should you desire. The candlesticks stand 4 1/4" tall with the base measurement being 3" corner to corner and 2 7/8" flat side to flat side. The Kiddush Cup measures 2 3/8" tall and 2 3/8" across the lip. The box measures 11 3/4" x 7 5/8" x 5 1/4".
Celebrating the Sabbath is a great pleasure in the Jewish tradition. You serve your best food, wear your best clothes, use your finest china, and of course - your beautiful sterling Shabbat set. Enjoy!
