This remarkably well preserved large platter is a fine example of late 18th C - early 19th C peafowl decorated soft paste pearlware straight out of a collection here in the northeast, fresh to market. Called 'spatterware' here in the US, it is generally referred to as 'spongeware' in the UK. The peafowl pattern is popular, varied, and highly collected this side of the pond. The Winterthur Museum in Delaware is home to a huge collection of over 1,200 pieces of spatterware housed in 'Spatterware Hall.'

This beautiful platter was created in the Staffordshire district of England and exported to the US sometime between the late 1700's and about 1850. This colorful pottery was popular up and down the east coast, and also made its way up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers to the newer territories where it was used, and used hard, so it is uncommon to find it in such pristine condition as this piece.

CONDITION is notably fabulous, as perfect as you would wish. It is free of any chips, cracks, or other aftermarket problems save for a few of the most minor utensil marks in the deep well surrounding the peacock, and the slight wear you want to see where the bottom makes contact. There are some glaze pops original to the manufacture, and a fine overall crazing, not apparent on the front, but visible in the close photo of the label on the back. There are three stilt marks on the front (top corners and center bottom) in which you can just catch a peek of the cream colored clay body, and three corresponding triangular sets of three small stilt marks each on the back. The glaze is still glossy overall; this platter looks to have been seldom used, a most excellent example. There are two stickers on the bottom from former collections, one with a number and notations, the other almost entirely worn away, part of the history of the piece now. Measures 10 1/4" x 13 7/16", although slightly irregular.

A fantastic addition to a collection, bound to be a star. It is simply remarkable that this large platter has survived the past two centuries in such pristine condition. Enjoy!
