Ebersol - Set of Six

These are traditional painted Pennsylvania farmhouse chairs made in America by a traditional American craftsman, L. B. Ebersol of Bareville, Pa. And made in a way that you may find in a few places, if you really search. The seats are all made of one solid slab, a plank that measures 1 3/4" thick, and appears to be walnut, although I have recently received a note saying that they appear to be Tulip Poplar which is certainly possible. Even antique country chairs have seats glued up of two or more thinner planks, and these have been beautifully contoured which makes them really comfortable to sit in. But it's the bright and cheerful hand painted floral decoration that really sets them apart.

L. B. Ebersol started making chairs in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1938. By the 1950's, there were three furniture companies in the county, today there are 30 or so, some of them quite large... competition is keen. In 1968, L. B. was joined by two of his sons, and the business became L. B. Ebersol & Sons. Today, the business is run by his son Alvin to whom I have spoken. He told me that at one time they had as many as six employees.

CONDITION is great, these chairs are rock solid and ready to go... some expected wear to the paint where they make contact with a table and a ding here and there, with one chair showing some paint wear on the top of the crest and around the edge of one ear. The chairs each bear the burnt stamp "Made by, L. B. Ebersol Bareville, Pa.", with one of two dates… 1958 or 1959. Each chair measures 33 1/4" tall overall. Floor to top of seat is 17", seat is 15" wide at the front, 14 1/4" wide at the back, and 14" deep.

A fantastic set of beautiful American chairs that will stand up to daily family use. They are 60 years old this year, well on their way to becoming Classic American Country Antiques… perhaps around the time their new owners hand them down to their kids, because no doubt, these chairs are destined to be heirlooms. Enjoy!
