How very, very Victorian. This lovely painting says a lot about the Victorian view of nature, idealized, romanticized, almost a fantasy, mythic environment, and more than a little naive. Water lilies in the foreground floating in a pond, with cypress rising in a distant morning mist… two subjects already made famous by Monet and Van Gogh. This beautiful painting is unmistakably infused with the ethos of Victorian times, from its subject to its highly decorative period frame..
CONDITION is very nice as you can see, with no rips or major problems, but there are some small issues. The frame was touched up and a bit of gold got on the canvas here and there around the edge. There are a couple of tiny losses, one that can be seen in the sky (top right edge sixth photograph), the other on the floating bud. And there are minor losses to the edge of the rather delicate frame, not very apparent because of its irregular, undulating contour. All in all, this piece displays beautifully, pointing to each tiny flaw really magnifies them beyond their impact on the whole. Measures 26 1/2" x 14 1/2" overall, with a sight size of 21 1/2" x 9 5/8". The canvas on its stretchers measures 22" x 10".
See through the eyes of the romantic Victorian artist, and this charming and very appealing painting will captivate you. This is a surprisingly engaging piece with a depth that draws you in to its lovely world. Enjoy!
