A real treat for those of us who love Antique American Country Furniture. This showy chest of drawers has a cherry case, but the drawer fronts are solid planks (not veneer!) of the most gorgeous figured maple, the top drawer tiger or curly, the bottom three birdseed. This piece is a knockout.
The chamfered drawers are dovetailed... half blind dovetails at the front, through dovetails at the back. The cherry case has fluted pilasters atop turned reeded feet... it's a fun and very frugal Yankee detail that the feet are only reeded where they face out, three quarters on the front, half on the back. The backboard has voluted ears and supports a partial gallery at the sides with another set of through dovetails, and one small center drawer with reeded cherry front. You can feel the marks from a smoothing plane on the back boards which are still held in place by the original square nails. The original locks and brass keyhole escutcheons are present. And those solid plank drawer fronts... did I mention those? First quarter of the 19th C.
CONDITION is great. The piece has had some repairs to the runners of the drawers as you would expect, but is fully functional, the drawers work well, and the surface has been skillfully refinished at some point and looks fantastic. There are also some pieces of very old tape where tiny knotholes have fallen out of the drawers, and a tiny wooden patch at the back of the top drawer... all signs of a well used and much loved piece. Measures 52" tall at the back board, and 42" tall at the front, the depth front to back is 21 1/2" overall, and the overall width of the piece is 44 3/4" at the widest. The The thickness of those fabulous SOLID planks of figured wood is a full 1 1/8" of wildly tiger grained maple on the top drawer, and a full 7/8" of beautiful birds eye maple on the bottom three graduated drawers; all the drawer fronts are 40" wide. The height of the drawers from top to bottom is 10 1/8" - 5 7/8" - 6 3/4" - 7 5/8".
This outstanding piece has all the warmth and personality that collectors love; definitely a showpiece, but completely functional. A charming piece of furniture, and not shy about it. Enjoy!
