When I first saw this piece I thought it was fine porcelain, but it's beautiful opaline glass. Covered with bright hand painted flowers, and decorated with gold on the flared lip and foot. There are roses, tulips, some flowers I don't recognize, and they all appear multiple times around this beauty with no repeats of any of the design elements. A simple, lovely, elegant piece of glass.
The pontil on the bottom is ground, with appropriate wear for an antique vase like this. There is a small mark in brown paint on the bottom, but I cannot make it out, it's very small, less than 1/4". Certainly Continental and probably French... others have said they believe it is Saint-Louis Glass. CONDITION is wonderful, no chips, cracks or repairs, just some wear to the gold and the bottom of the foot just where it should be on an old piece. Measures approximately 12" tall, a nice large size. It's really a marvelous piece with beautiful proportions... and the painting is well suited to it's shape, with the largest bunches of flowers appearing around the bulbous belly of the vase. I just know you'll love it!
