Great early pitcher in pristine original condition! The white alkaline glaze is applied over the yellow ware both inside and out. Then the exterior is sponge decorated on the exterior and on the interior.
It is not uncommon for these early pottery pieces to be unmarked which makes it difficult to determine whether it was fabricated in England or America. These utilitarian objects were made for everyday use and date circa 1860 -1900 or so. It is difficult to date specifically, without the markings unless you are very familiar with the particular clay body used or the shape thrown on the wheel of a local pottery.
This shape is very pleasing to the eye and the colourings are wonderful, with a very strong blue and plenty of it! This pitcher measures 7 1/2" tall and 7" wide from spout to handle.
As is typical with pottery and wheel thrown items, the clay sometimes had impurities, like sand, which burst through the glaze, but these are just "beauty marks" and not chips, cracks or breakage. As is common with items of this age, there are several tiny "pock marks". There are two slightly larger ones, too (about 1/8" or less)...but they are original to the making and not damage. They are not large, but we are including a picture so you know they are there.
