Carl Thieme's factory in Dresden Germany certainly knows how to catch your eye! This hand painted and reticulated round bowl or basket is stunningly decorated with alpine flowers, but we love the unusual twisted roping around the base.

Although he'd been a successful antique dealer his love of porcelain lead him to establish his decorating studio in 1860 where they painted white porcelain blanks. By 1872 his company began to produce its own porcelain. Thieme decorated in the well-love patterns of Meissen, Sevres and Vienna. He employed experienced artisans who were especially skilled in the area of porcelain painting. Realistic florals and botanicals from the old masters were closely copied from arrangements in books and from Meissen. The Thieme Factory is still in existence and producing the museum quality work it has been known for all these years. We found this identical hand painted centerpiece basket in their 2009 catalogue and priced at 1,220 euros or $1,659 (US)!!! (If you'd like to see a photo of the page and price list from this catologue we'd be happy to email it to you).

This excessively Rococo Revival styled, elaborately decorated centerpiece displays individually painted botanical florals and meticulously hand applied gold embellishments.

The hand painted florals are permanently fused (the paints are coloured glass and melted in the kiln) onto the bowl/basket. This form of decorative art requires practice, skill, diligence and experience. The absorbent surface has to be painted with great skill because a wrong stroke of the brush is difficult to correct. The paint represents a liquid paste that has been thinned with water and a syrup-like agent until it becomes the correct consistency for the artist's brush.

As the finishing touch, the gold painter decorated the porcelain pieces with paint made from precious metals.

Lovely condition...no cracks, hairlines, chips or flakes. Gold unworn.

8 5/8" diameter and 4" tall (22 x 10.2 cm)
