This hand painted and reticulated cake plate comes from the Carl Thieme Saxony Porcelain in Dresden, Germany. This hand painted and reticulated bowl comes from the Carl Thieme Saxony Porcelain in Dresden, Germany.
Gorgeous from every angle, this bowl is painted inside and out! The inner edge of the sides, the verge, is decorated with hand painted gold swags and festoons. The central motif is an elaborated painted nosegay of alpine flowers and it is set off by several petite sprigs for good measure!
Thieme decorated in the well-love patterns of Meissen, Sevres and Vienna. He employed experienced artisans who were especially skilled in the area of porcelain painting. Realistic florals and botanicals from the old masters were closely copied from arrangements in books and from Meissen.
This excessively Rococo Revival styled, elaborately decorated bowl displays individually painted botanical florals and meticulously hand applied gold embellishments.
The hand painted florals are permanently fused (the paints are coloured glass and melted in the kiln) onto these plates, saucers, cups, etc. This form of decorative art requires practice, skill, diligence and experience. The absorbent surface has to be painted with great skill because a wrong stroke of the brush is difficult to correct. The paint represents a liquid paste that has been thinned with water and a syrup-like agent until it becomes the correct consistency for the artist's brush.
As the finishing touch, the gold painter decorated this porcelain bowl with paint made from precious metals. The paint used was liquid polishing gold that emerged from the firing with a dull sheen which then required polishing.
The factory is still producing hand painted porcelain items and although much of it is not quite as embellished these days, they still offer a dish similar to this one in their current catalogue. Their 7.5" version retails for $853.00!!!! Now, as before, all their gorgeous offerings are painted by hand and the reticulations are patiently hand cut, too.
Lovely condition. No wear to gold gilding or surfaces anywhere. No chips, cracks, flakes or hairlines.
