Wonderful example of Arts & Crafts or Jugendstil design Hammered Silver Oval Napkin Ring. Measures approximately 1 3/4" X 2 1/8" X 1 1/4" high. Weighs approximately 22 grams/.72 troy/14.2 dwt. Hand Hammered allover design with 12 raised "V" decorations. Rolled edges top and bottom. Bears the hallmarks---"Crescent moon, crown, 835S, maker's mark". In 1884, Germany passed a law that stated the minimum National Standard for silver would be .800. This napkin ring is marked 835, above the standard. The maker's mark ["L" and "W"] identifies it as that of Lutz & Weiss of Pforzheim, founded in 1882. [ To avoid confusion, the United States standard for sterling silver is .925, so this napkin ring is silver, but not sterling]. In very good condition--no dents or splits; some tiny tarnish spots; wear commensurate with age and use. Circa 1900-1915. Not monogrammed.
