The highest quality French Enamel on Copper Portrait signed by Dorval. Limoges was famous for producing items of this caliber. Measures approximately 3 3/8" X 5 5/8" high. Turquoise blue guilloche enamel forms the background; her hair is a honey color [wonderful loop on top!]; her dress is pink with yellow roses and a lace collar. Her face is beautifully done--a sign of a master artist. The enamel itself is approximately 3" X 3 5/8" oval and curves outward. Greyish tone to the frame--was probably originally silvered. Label on back of the enamel reads "3452 France ____ 1830". Dates circa 1860s, original back is worn--there is no nap left from the velvet. Signed "DORVAL" lower right. Paste stones have not been cleaned. There are 3 stones missing--see the photo where I have outlined those settings. All stones are prong set. Slight wear on some of the lace. In very good condition for its age of 140+ years but certainly not perfect. There are "spider" lines on the back of the enamel [see photo] that does not go through--when the enamel is taken out of the kiln it is set down and sometimes lines do form--does not affect the front. Not easily found, enamels on copper of this quality are a wonderful addition to any collection.
