Unusual Miniature French Metal Frame with Spring-Loaded Mechanism that holds the back and picture in place. Marked on the lower back of the Frame "Made in France [illegible]". Also marked on a metal label on the easel "BREVETE SGDG H & S". Brevete is French for "Patented". The mechanism holds the convex shaped metal back in, then you flip the bottom of the easel up to remove the convex piece [it may have held a small portrait on metal] and insert your photo, then flip the easel down again to keep the convex piece and photo in securely. No glass. Measures approximately 2 1/4" X 3 1/2" high, with the photo area approximately 1 1/2" X 1 7/8" high. Dates late 1890s-1910. The ornate details are very crisp and fine with their original gun-metal grey color. Scrolled feet, ribbon and bow on top, beading and other motifs make this a little treasure.
