Antique Italian oil painting depicting the 'Madonna del Sangue', also known as the 'Madonna of the Blood', from the village of Re in the Italian region of Piemont . The village of Re is an important pilgrim destination, whose sanctuary is devoted to the Virgin Mary, built on the site where it is said a miracle occurred in 1494 when the small fresco of the nursing Madonna started bleeding after being hit by a stone.
The painting is of very fine craftmanship and quality. It is painted oil on metal and in perfect condition. On the backside the former owner has attached a hand written poem devoted to the Holy Virgin written by Joseph Eichendorf ( German poet). The painting is in excellent condition and dated at the 19th century.
