A 19th century Roman Micro Mosaic box, gilt bronze, enamelled by Cesare Roccheggiani depicting the Doves of Pliny.The Micro Mosaic is very fine crafted ,has beautiful colours of various blue and white tones and is in perfect condition. There is no damage of any kind. The box has a rare hexagonal form, the top inlaid with the Micro Mosaic within a beaded border, the sides enamelled with scrolling foliage, on four small bun feet. It is tufted with red silk and velvet inside. The inside of the lid with a label inscribed C. ROCCHEGGIANI .The box closes perfectly and is in excellent condition. It is dated at the second half of the 19th century. Diameter: 3.1"( 80mm) Height: 1.6"( 40mm)
Note: Cesare Roccheggiani was employed at the Vatican Micro Mosaic workshop from 1856 to 1864, but also set up his own workshop which is recorded firstly at 125 Via Babuino and then, by 1874, at 14 & 15 Via Condotti. Here he mostly produced small decorative pieces for the tourist market, such as the present lot.
